What's a canzona?
It's not an Italian sidedish. Although the term "canzona" has many musical and poetic meanings, one popular type of Renaissance instrumental canzona consists of multiple instrumental lines, typically 4-8, which often imitate or echo each other. Each melodic line typically begins with a standard rhythm: long, short, short, e.g. half note, quarter note, quarter note, usually on the same pitch. You might think it as an early style of object-oriented composition. Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612) wrote many canzonas, including "Canzon Seconda". If you listen during lunch, maybe it really is an Italian sidedish. |
